The paper “Computer-Aided Design of Escher-Like Tiling” coauthored by Professor SUGIHARA and Mr. Hiroshi KOIZUMI (The University of Tokyo) was awarded the prize of Outstanding Paper Awards on 23rd October 2009 at the 25th NICOGRAPH Paper Contest held on 23rd and 24th October 2009 at Tokyo University of Technology.
NICOGRAPH Paper Contest is an annual event for presenting research activities of computer graphics and media arts, which is organized by the Society for Art and Science.
The selected paper approaches the computer-aided method of tiling art to fill the surface with complicated shaped tiles (e.g. animals) like Escher’s work. The method is to find the closest models to user-given shapes by using computational program for calculating the maximum eigenvalue of a positive definite symmetric matrix. The uniqueness and efficiency of the idea are highly evaluated at the contest.
