Professor Masayasu Mimura, the founding director of our institute (MIMS) and professor emeritus of Meiji University and of Hiroshima University, passed away on April 8, 2021, due to interstitial lung disease.

Professor Mimura had had this disease for several years, but the symptom remained very minor and few people knew that he had this problem. However, since last autumn, his condition gradually worsened. His funeral was held on April 11, privately as per family wishes.

MIMS (Meiji Institute for Advanced Study of Mathematical Sciences) was founded in 2007 thanks in large part to the enormous efforts of Professor Mimura. Since then, MIMS has taken an active role as one of the leading research centers of Mathematical Sciences in the country, under the strong leadership of Professor Mimura. He was also the president of Japan SIAM and of the Japanese Society for Mathematical Biology for a number of years.

Professor Mimura was a person with untiring zeal for acquiring new knowledge and making new discoveries, and he devoted all his life to the development of research fields related to mathematical modeling and its applications. His scientific approach and his research style have had an enduring influence on many researchers in and outside of the country. His research was focused on deepening our understanding of social and natural phenomena through mathematical modeling, but, for those of us who knew him as a colleague, mentor and friend, his life itself was a great model from which we have learned many things.

May his soul rest in peace.
