"2D Numerical Simulations of Optical Illusions"

Abstract:
Recently Sushida, Kondo, Sugihara and Mimura have proposed a new differential equation model of the human vision system in order to understand the mechanism of optical illusions. This is a macroscopic model based on the known retinal cell neural network. It explains two mutually contradicting phenomena called lightness contrast and lightness assimilation. They numerically solved this model to understand brightness optical illusions in one dimension. The purpose of my talk is to numerically study this model in two dimensions, comment on the value of control parameters and show some simulations of optical illusions.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Visual perception of 3D-mirror and 3D-rotational symmetry

Abstract:
Visual perception in our everyday life is almost always veridical. We can see shapes and positions of objects in a scene as they are. However, it is theoretically an ill-posed problem. The scene out there is three-dimensional while a retinal image of the scene is two-dimensional. The visual system resolves this ill-posedness by using a priori constraints. I and my colleagues have shown that 3D mirror-symmetry of an object is especially an effective constraint for detecting the object and recovering its 3D shape from a single 2D retinal image. It is because mirror symmetry introduces redundancy to the shape of the object and introduces some model-based invariants to its 2D image. Besides, similar geometrical properties exist also for 3D rotational symmetry. In this study, I will discuss those types of 3D symmetry, their roles in visual perception, and difference between them for the visual system.

Can touch correct visual illusions?

Abstract:
Perceiving the correct shapes of objects is necessary for inferring object qualities, manipulating tools, avoiding obstacles, and other aspects of functioning successfully in the world. Since observers can estimate object properties from larger distances using vision than they can from touch, generally vision makes predictions that touch relies on, such as the shape of a handle or chair. However, since the information in retinal images is inherently under-determined, the inferential power of vision arises from employing intelligent heuristics / assumptions / priors, but this inevitably leads to illusory percepts in some cases. What are the possible functions of touch in such cases? Observers could rely entirely on the haptic percept and ignore the erroneous visual percept, or touch could temporarily correct the visual percept, or there could be longer lasting effects if observers learn to change their visual prior assumptions or weights for different visual cues. We tested these possibilities by measuring the effects of various types of haptic feedback on the perception of real objects and proper perspective projections of 3-D surfaces. The results show that in the perception of 3-D shapes, haptic information can dominate vision in some cases by changing percepts. The effects take time to develop, are attenuated by distance, drastically reduced by gaps in the surface, and fade rapidly after the cessation of the feedback. These dynamic shifts in qualitative perceived shapes could be a key to whether haptic feedback modifies the gain of neurons responsible for percepts of 3-D curvatures and slants, or the shape-tuning, or whether haptic-visual interactions happen after independent decisions in the two modalities.

Nearly a theory of visualization

Abstract:
Information visualization is about transforming non-visual information into visual information, to guide humans to draw explanatory or exploratory inferences. We present the hypothesis that a picture is an inductive hypothesis about some set of foundation data. Furthermore, we argue that a theory of visualization should guide the composition of transformations to produce a picture that encodes some intended inferential bias when viewed by a human. Components of that theory should help articulate what should be preserved in a picture, what aspects of human visual cognition are best exploited in preferred inference, and how alternative transformations can be evaluated with respect to intended inference.
